Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2021)

This theatrical film, continuing directly from the end of Demon Slayer Season 1, rewrote anime film history. It became the all-time highest-grossing film at the Japanese box office and achieved massive worldwide success. The film itself proves that those achievements weren’t purely the product of fan loyalty. My rating is ★4.0.

Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke board the Mugen Train alongside Flame Hashira Rengoku (Satoshi Hino), one of the Demon Slayer Corps’ most powerful swordsmen. Every night, passengers on this train go missing, and fighting the demons responsible forms the heart of the film. Knowing the series enriches the experience, but the film’s narrative structure is easy enough to follow on its own.

Direction — ufotable animation that set a new standard

ufotable’s animation quality is unmatched here. When the Flame Breathing, Water Breathing, and Thunder Breathing techniques fill the screen, the visual explosiveness is clearly designed for a cinema screen. The climactic battle sequence in particular pushes the limits of what hand-drawn animation can achieve and sets a new benchmark for the genre.

Performance — Satoshi Hino, the heart of the film

Satoshi Hino’s voice performance as Rengoku Kyojuro is the heart of this film. From his commanding first impression, to the fierce will to protect his comrades in battle, to the human vulnerability he reveals at the end — he builds a three-dimensional character through voice alone. Natsuki Hanae as Tanjiro also conveys the emotional arc of a pure and passionate character with great skill.

What the film says — The spirit of flame passed across generations

The film’s emotional power ultimately comes from Rengoku as a character. The story of someone willing to stake everything for duty and conviction moved a great many viewers to tears. The process by which the younger protagonists — with less age and experience — come to understand something by watching him is simple but delivered with genuine sincerity. Rengoku knows he is fighting an opponent he cannot defeat, yet he fights to the last to protect those entrusted to him. That choice is possible because he holds an unshakeable belief. The spirit of flame — protect the weak, become strong — is not an empty slogan but something proven through body and action. Knowing how Tanjiro remembers Rengoku’s final words, and the impact they have on later events, adds even more weight to this film. It is the work in which the theme of spirit and responsibility passed from generation to generation is most directly embodied.

Ratings & reception

IMDb score: 8.2. The global box office results and audience response were overwhelming. At its Japanese release it broke the record for the fastest film to surpass 10 billion yen, and total worldwide earnings exceeded 500 million dollars. It is the film that rewrote the all-time anime box office records.

Weaknesses

The plot is simple. Board the train, fight demons, end. Because the film focuses on sensory pleasure and emotional impact rather than narrative depth, those expecting a complex story may be disappointed. Viewers completely unfamiliar with the series may also find the character backgrounds underexplained. The dream sequences in the first half have good intentions — showing each character’s inner world — but feel somewhat drawn out. The threat level of the demon among the Twelve Kizuki isn’t sufficiently conveyed for first-time viewers compared to fans of the source material. Since the film is built to function as part of a series rather than as a standalone work, this limitation is hard to avoid. Watching with the knowledge that it leads into Season 2 makes for a more comfortable experience.

Verdict

Essential viewing for fans of the series, and even first-time viewers will find their hearts moved by the visual impact of the climax and the sheer presence of Rengoku. The single line he leaves behind at the end stays with you for a long time.
