The biggest differentiator for this series is a protagonist in his mid-thirties who works as a monster cleanup worker. Hibino Kafka, who kept failing to join the Defence Force and worked disposing of kaiju remains, suddenly gains the ability to transform into a kaiju. Instead of the teenage protagonist common in hero stories, a character near middle age getting powers creates something fresh — and the weight of the desperation that character carries is different too.

Set in a world where kaiju routinely appear and threaten people. Japan’s Defence Force subdues the kaiju, while Hibino Kafka works as a kaiju cleanup contractor after giving up on his long-held dream of joining the Defence Force. One day, after swallowing a small kaiju, he gains the ability to transform into one. The original manga is by Naoya Matsumoto, with the anime produced by Production I.G. It began airing in April 2024.

Direction — Inventive Kaiju Design

Production I.G’s animation is stable and kinetic in action sequences. The battle scenes of Kafka transformed as a kaiju are especially intense, standing in clear contrast to the Defence Force members’ combat. The way each kaiju’s movement and form is designed is creative, with a distinct sense of threat to each one. Fast-paced storytelling and action climaxes in every episode maintain the viewing rhythm.

Performance & characters — An Ordinary, Fallible Kafka

Masaya Fukunishi’s Kafka is diligent and desperate but never too exceptional as a character. Even after gaining his abilities, he continues to make mistakes, panic, and worry about being discovered — naturally maintaining the qualities of an ordinary human. Asami Seto’s Kashima Mina is a cool, highly capable Defence Force member, and her reaction upon learning Kafka’s secret creates an important turning point in the series. Tomokazu Sugita’s Hoshina Ikkyuu makes a strong impression in limited time.

What the work says — A Person Chasing a Dream Late

What Kaiju No. 8 adds to the hero genre is the story of a person who gained abilities too late. The question of whether someone who didn’t achieve something at a young age has to give up is a simple anime premise, but it resonates directly with adult viewers who have wrestled with similar worries. At the same time, Kafka’s determination to use his abilities for good even knowing they could be a threat to the world is the series’ central conflict.

IMDb score is 8.2. TMDB is 8.4. It was among the most talked-about new titles of the Spring 2024 season, quickly building a fanbase on global platforms including Netflix and Crunchyroll.

What doesn’t work

Season 1 ends after twelve episodes, and the story continues into the next season without a satisfying conclusion. The lack of resolution is the biggest disappointment. Other characters’ backgrounds also don’t get enough development, and supporting characters have relatively few opportunities to shine. The story’s progression is somewhat formulaic for a hero series, despite the fresh setup.

Verdict

My rating is ★4.0. The setup and the protagonist’s distinctive personality differentiate it well from other hero stories. It was the most enjoyable new title of Spring 2024, and expectations for what Season 2 will bring are high. Anyone who likes hero stories will enjoy this unconditionally. The premise of a man in his mid-thirties goes beyond mere novelty — it carries the desperation and urgency of someone chasing a dream late in life into the story. The bewilderment of an ordinary man who wanted to join the Defence Force upon gaining kaiju abilities, and his determination to use those abilities for good, is this series’ warm-hearted core. Once you start, there’s an action climax every episode that makes it hard to stop. Production I.G’s stable animation and the inventive kaiju designs are also strong points.
